Sorry for lack of updates, I have been editing, etc.
But here's the next chapter!
Enjoy!

-------------------------------------

Was it blackmail? Maybe, I’m not an expert on the subject. I am worrying about my Mom and Mikhail again, and was expecting an answer about them. “Well Yassen, lets just say they aren’t in any danger.” Natalie said, without emotion, but emphasizing ‘lets’.

“I don’t care what ‘lets’ says, I want to know what happened to them.” I said, putting air-quotations around ‘lets’.

“They’re at your house still.” She replied.

“Where in my house?” I shot back. I still don’t trust her.

“In their beds.”

“Tied up?”

“No.”

“Good.” I answered, dismissing it for the moment and looking around the huge, seemingly empty room. At least, emptier than it should be. “I’ve done what you wanted me to do, now you have to tell me: what happened to my dad?” That’s right, I am a spy now. It sucks but I didn’t really have much of a choice.

“Yassen, you may expect this now that you know that your father was an agent for us.” She paused, took a breath, and then continued. “He was shot during one of his missions.” She told me solemnly, or at least, as solemnly as she cold without showing her feelings.

She was wrong. I didn’t expect it. I didn’t expect him to be a secret agent, and I didn’t expect him to have been shot. “So he was shot. And I suppose that you are going to make me continue what he left off, and not care at all if I fail, like my dad.”

She lost her temper for a second. “That’s not true!” She calmed down quickly. “Yassen, if we thought you would die easily, it would only be a waste of time for us. But you are a kid, and he won’t expect you.”

“OK, who’s ‘he’?” I inquired.

“Ricardo Vidareichi. He has been under suspicion for the theft of many priceless gems, and we think he is planning to make some toxic gas out of some part of it.” The Englishman said, looking up from his computer and swiveling it towards us.

“Of course, like usual no one believes us.” Billany noted.
I scanned the page about the thefts, reading anything that looked interesting. Apparently, he never was the one to steal the rocks, so he always had an alibi. When I finished, I nodded, and he tapped on the keyboard and clicked a few times as a picture and details about Ricardo himself filled the monitor. I took in the information about the 41 year old; he was a long, skinny man, standing about 6’5”, with his face twisted as if it was being held there for the picture. I don’t think he smiles much in person, not even at his wife. His fine brown hair was combed neatly, with a part over on the left side of his head. His wife, Julie, his fourth, was quite the opposite of him, with knotted blonde hair that would have looked nice if she had at least brushed it down a bit, and a larger body, much larger in fact. She was 5’7” and weighed over 200 Ibs. I hoped I wouldn’t be seeing her close up too much. They had a son, age 9, somewhat a coincidence that he was near my age, and his name was Leone. Leone. It sounded so much more peaceful and I felt myself warming up to him already. His blonde hair was parted in a similar way as his father’s, but not quite as exact, and his green eyes seemed to be gazing into mine.

Odd, I thought, how different the three were from each other. Then again, everything about Ricardo was very… how shall I put it? Weird. I nodded again, and the screen went to two young twin girls, probably around 4. Confused, I opened my mouth to ask Jim who they were (he had introduced himself earlier) but he answered for me: “My daughters.”

I nodded dumbly, realizing it was a screensaver. Stupid me. “So,” I said, trying to work it all out. “My dad was assigned to investigate this…” I tried to find a word that could describe him. “…Guy?” Jim and Natalie nodded, so I continued. “But he was shot. Which means that Ricardo figured out who he was, and now he’ll be extra careful to cover his tracks. Right?” My response was two more nods.

“You are a very smart boy Yassen.” Billany remarked, in which it was my turn to nod.

One question was still hanging in my brain. “How do you get me into his castle?” I asked. I had seen a picture on his profile and his house was no ordinary mansion.

Jim grinned, seeming to be pleased I had asked. “His son plays soccer. We’ve arranged for you to be on the same team as him. I hope you enjoy the sport.” He handed me some books but I handed them back.

“I know how to play.” I did, and played a lot with Mikhail and my friends.

“One more thing before you leave for training Yassen,” Natalie said. “Actually two, the first is that you will be getting gadgets similar to the ones you have read about in the Alex Rider books.”

I grinned, wondering how they would duplicate any of them, or if it was even legal, when Jim, gone one second and back the next, walked in with a Nintendo Game System. I smiled; it was a gadget, directly from the first Alex Rider book, Stormbreaker. (Author’s note: Stormbreaker is an amazing book and I guarantee you will enjoy it) (You’d better enjoy it).

Billany plucked it off the tray and handed it to me, then sat back down in her chair. It seemed to be one smooth motion. “There is only one game for it, and it has a few features from Anthony Horowitz’s and a few of our own. You don’t know how hard it was to sort out the legal issues… Never mind, it has a bug detector, so you know when someone’s listening in on you. Then there’s a tape recorder that doubles as a lie detector. We have-“

I cut in again. “Wouldn’t it be kind of awkward if I’m talking to Ricardo, or anyone for that matter, and suddenly a beeping comes from my pocket?”

Jim answered for Billany. “It won’t beep, it will flash a light, but only when you play it back. You see, when you play the tape back later, the power light will blink if someone tells a lie. By holding down the ‘start’ and ‘select’ buttons for 5 seconds, it will send the tape to us where we can listen to it. Unfortunately, you have to manually select 30 seconds of the tape. Too hard to program any more.”

“And then there’s a smoke grenade, five-second fuse. Very thick smoke, poor Jim just about suffocated.” Natalie informed me.

Jim shot her an angry glare, and I realized that the Russian spies were under funded! Way under funded! Surely the government would have given them enough money to hire some assistants, and maybe more than the two guards they had.

I pretended I didn't care too much. “Jim,” I asked. “You make all these gadgets, right?”

He looked at Billany, and then nodded slowly.

“You guys don’t have enough money to hire people to make these for you.” I said, holding up the Nintendo.

Jim nodded again. “That’s correct.” He replied solemnly.

The woman tried to change the subject. “And the last feature is-“

An explosion cut her off. The window shattered and I heard gunfire. Why am I not surprised?
